Thirlwall castle
THIRLWALL is a township, 4 miles west-north-west from Haltwhistle, and extends 1 mile northeast of Greenhead station on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway.
Here are the ruins of Thirlwall Castle, erected at the beginning of the 14th century, On the banks of the river Tipalt; it is now a gloomy ruin standing amid a group of firs; only fragment of the structure, built of ashlars obtained from the Roman wall, and inclosing dark passages with shouldered headings, is now standing, the south side having fallen into the river in 1831 the interior is overgrown with moss and rank vegetation; here it is said Edward I. slept September 20, 1306 At Carvoran, south-east from the ruins of the castle, is the site of the Roman station Magna, where interesting remains are still visible. Here are collieries belonging to the Thirlwall Coal Company Limited.
